The XX win the Mercury

So London gloomsters The XX have won this years Mercury. A good choice?

I reckon so, though the prize was awarded surprisingly predictably considering the industry panel's usual tendency to pick left field outsiders.

'XX' is a haunting LP full of minimalist beauty and nuance...and a bucketload of thinly veiled sexual references. It wasn't my favourite album from last year, but it was certainly in the top 5.

I'm not sure which album I would've picked as the best from the Mercury nominations...might have been The XX I guess. Or Foals. My Mum likes I Am Kloot the best.

Here's the list of nominations with the bookie's odds listed alongide.

Dizzee Rascal – Tongue N' Cheek (4/1)
The xx – xx (4/1)
Paul Weller – Wake Up the Nation (6/1)
Corinne Bailey Rae – The Sea (6/1)
Mumford and Sons – Sigh No More (6/1)
Laura Marling – I Speak Because I Can (6/1)
Foals – Total Life Forever (8/1)
Wild Beasts – Two Dancers (8/1)
Biffy Clyro – Only Revolutions (8/1)
Villagers – Becoming a Jackal (10/1)
Kit Downes Trio – Golden (10/1)
